Editorial Cuadernos de Sofía SPA (Chilean tax ID 77.649.795-9) is a privately owned academic press, incorporated in Chile and registered with the Chilean Book Chamber (Cámara Chilena del Libro). It is not part of a university or learned society and receives no structural subsidy from public institutions, funding agencies or commercial organisations. Our operations are funded by the revenue sources described below, which we publish so that authors, readers and institutions can assess our editorial independence.
1. Publishing services paid by authors or their institutions. This is our main source of revenue. Book authors contract one of our published packages (Academic, Professional or Premium), whose prices and scope are available at https://cuadernosdesofia.com/cuanto-cuesta-publicar-un-libro-academico/. The fee covers editorial management, external peer review, editing and proofreading, design, open access production, DOI and ISBN assignment, metadata optimisation for indexing, academic SEO advice, author support at every stage with verifiable documentation of each one, and permanent hosting of the work, with no time limit, with digital preservation in the Internet Archive. Payment does not condition the outcome of peer review: a manuscript that does not pass receives detailed feedback and support, and withdrawal conditions are set out in each package’s contract. We do not offer waivers or discounts on book publishing services.
2. Print on demand. All our books are published open access. Readers may purchase printed copies through Amazon, Ingram, Buscalibre, Mercado Libre and local distributors. From each sale the press receives the net revenue after deducting printing costs and the distributor’s commission; of that net revenue, 90 % is paid to the author and 10 % is retained by the press for catalogue management and distribution. In addition, each author may purchase up to 50 copies of their work at author price (printing and shipping cost, with no margin for the press). Copyright remains entirely with the authors, as stated in our Copyright Terms.
3. Co-publishing agreements and services to institutions. When a university, research centre or graduate programme co-publishes a work or contracts publishing services for its production, the agreement is formalised in writing and the institution is credited on the copyright page. Such agreements give the institution no say in editorial decisions or in the selection of reviewers.
4. Scholarly journals. The journals we publish (Revista Inclusiones, Cuadernos de Arte Prehistórico and 100-Cs, among others) state on their own websites whether they charge article processing charges (APCs). Where a journal charges APCs, its waiver and discount policy is published on that journal’s website.
What we do not do. We do not sell advertising (see https://cuadernosdesofia.com/politica-de-publicidad/), we do not charge for indexing or DOI assignment, we do not offer guaranteed acceptance, and we accept no payment from third parties to publish or promote a work.
Any substantive change to this model will be published on this page. Queries: editorial@cuadernosdesofia.com.
